Where is the U.S. housing market headed?

Season 3, Episode 22: Dr. Kuehl talks about the latest interest rates and mortgage rates.

ASA Chief Economist Dr. Chris Kuehl is back with his weekly economic update podcast. In Season 3, Episode 22 (9:30 in length), Dr. Kuehl answers two member questions that go hand in hand: “How much do you think the fed will raise interest rates in the next year?” And “Will mortgage rates go down this year? Is it better or worse to buy a house in a recession?”

  • What is the neutral rate of interest?
  • What are the conversations on changing this rate?
  • What would it mean to the Fed policy if this rate changes?
  • At what stage has the Fed’s activity kicked in?
  • What are the latest inflation numbers showing?
  • What is the challenge with PCE?
  • Are we seeing mortgage rates going down any time soon?
  • Is the housing market responding to the recession?
  • What tends to happen with rates and prices in a recession? Where is the first place we would see this?
  • What is the silver lining in a recession??
